Animal Emergency Services
You may experience delays and a long load time

This interactive workshop provides perspective on national disaster response and relief for animals. It teaches techniques for actually rescuing animals in a disaster, setting up a temporary shelter to house and care for them, interacting with the public, and ultimately reuniting the animals with their owners, as well as covering Pet First Aid and how to manage public relations. Included is an overview of incident specific response and interagency cooperation, Incident Command System (ICS), emergency management principles and management resources. There is in - depth discussion of emergency services volunteer roles, responsibilities and safety. Other topics covered are large animal handling, use of various equipment, livestock care, small animal handling, proper restraint methods & handling techniques, how to get animals safely in and out of crates/cages, animal behavior, feeding, watering, cleaning and exercising of animals in a temporary sheltering facility. The finale is participation in a hands-on mock shelter set-up and response exercise.

In the very near future any person who wants to volunteer during an emergency or disaster to work with animals will be required to be certified by having taken an animal emergency services workshop like this one and to complete FEMA courses IS-100 and IS-700 (free courses available on-line) as a minimum.

Tri State CART has a wonderful website which provides links to the various organizations that offer the emergency animal services training and workshops. There are also links to many helpful sites to help people with animal-related disaster concerns, information and problem solving.
